Now that summer has come to an end, it’s time to start thinking about going back to school. While you’re packing your bags and preparing your school supplies, it’s important to remember that your vehicle needs preparation as well. We have put together a back to college vehicle maintenance checklist so you can make sure your car is ready to hit the road while you get ready to hit the books.

1. Oil

Oil is the most basic maintenance item you need to check off. Proper oil levels and condition will keep your vehicle running smoothly and prevent irreparable damage to your engine. Staying up to date on your oil changes can sometimes be difficult, but it is vital to the proper function of your vehicle. Set a reminder on your phone or write on your calendar when your vehicle is due for an oil change so you don’t let it slip by!

2. Lights

Functioning brake lights and headlights are not only for your safety, but they can also prevent you from being pulled over or ticketed for faulty lights. Check all the lights on your vehicle, including blinkers to ensure they are all working properly.

3. Brakes

Having your brakes checked by an experienced technician can help prevent a variety of mishaps as you travel back to school. Brake pads are meant to be replaced when they become thin to ensure proper function and eliminate squeaking or grinding when braking.

4. Tires

Are your tires appropriate for the terrain on which you will be traveling? Check the tread on your tires by placing a penny in the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can still see Lincoln’s head, your tread is worn down and your tires need to be replaced.

5. Battery

Is your battery starting your vehicle consistently and properly running all the electrical systems in your vehicle? Check the date on your car’s battery and replace the battery every 3-5 years. Clean any corrosion off the battery’s connection points with a solution of baking powder and water and a toothbrush.

6. Extras

Along with the mechanical function of your vehicle, make sure you have everything necessary in the case of an emergency. Do you have your proof of insurance? Do you have a spare tire and jack? Jumper cables and emergency medical supplies are also handy things to store in your trunk.
