Most people are looking for ways to squeeze a little more mileage out of each tank of gas. With gas prices as high as they are, it’s no surprise. There are hybrid vehicles that have excellent fuel efficiency, but hybrids are still fairly expensive, and many people are not ready to make that leap yet. Regardless of what kind of vehicle you drive, there are many ways to get more miles per gallon.
Drive smart.
Your vehicle’s optimal fuel speed depends on its make and model, but all vehicles start to see a major decrease in fuel efficiency when being driven over 50 miles an hour. You can also waste gas by accelerating rapidly and hitting the brakes quickly. Speeding, rapid acceleration, and quick braking have been estimated to drop your fuel efficiency by more than 30 percent. In addition to saving you gas, obeying the speed limit and practicing safe driving helps reduce your chance of being in an accident.
Clean out your car.
For many of us these days, it can seem as if we live in our vehicles. Between carpool and Starbucks runs, things can pile up in your car. Excess weight in your vehicle makes your engine work harder and uses up more gas. Cleaning out these excess items can help save you gas. If possible, place larger items in your truck instead of using a rack on the roof which can create drag and decrease your fuel efficiency by five percent or more.
Make sure your car is in good shape.
Depending on your vehicle, having maintenance performed on your car can increase your fuel efficiency by anywhere from five percent to forty percent! Make sure your tires are inflated to the correct pressure. You can improve your mileage by around three percent by doing this, and it will make your tires last longer. Lastly, make sure you are using the motor oil recommended by your car’s manufacturer.
